Any provider can plan and implement a super field trip. The key to success is prior planning. The following are some items to consider before you leave the driveway!
Print out this checklist before you leave for a fieldtrip.
Do you have signed permission slips from all parents? Remember to carry emergency information with you at all times.
Do you have your first aid kit well-stocked with bandages, gauze pads, antiseptic, and other items to use if needed?
Have you made a note of all allergies that children may have? Bring along medication, inhalers, and bee-sting kits if needed.
If you are transporting children in your vehicle, be sure that you have car seats and appropriate insurance coverage. Double-check your gas tank!
Have you planned for the weather? Protection from the sun is essential when outside, apply sunscreen to children as needed. Suggest that children wear layers of clothing that can be added or removed for comfort, and that they bring a shade hat.
Never put name tags on the children. This makes it easier for strangers to approach, familiarizing themselves by using the child's name. If you need to visually identify the children, have them wear the same color shirts on the day of the trip. (If your program has the funds to print T-shirts, they are also a great marketing tool!)
Have you packed snacks and drinks? Small bags of trail mix, granola bars, or cereal can be easily transported. In some public parks, water may not be available. Bring along a large jug, paper cups or juice boxes. (Freeze them the night before so they stay cold.)
Pack some new books or a quiet game to use while waiting for a tour to start, or while traveling in the car.
Bring a stroller along! Even if you have an older group, it will come in handy on long walks. A stroller can hold all of your gear as well as a tired child, if necessary.
If you are a family child care provider, bring another adult along with you. In an emergency, an extra pair of hands could be a life-saver!
ALWAYS call ahead to confirm hours, fees, and to double-check that your destination is not closed for renovations, private functions, etc.
