Reading is one of the best ways to promote literacy. Children who are exposed to books early in life generally are better readers and writers and perform better in school. Reading helps to develop a child's depth of language by exposing them to words that they may have never heard before. Below are some suggestions about how to promote reading with the children in your program. Reading is important and most of all FUN!
When reading to a young preschooler:
- Have the child sit on your lap or sit beside you and discuss the book's cover.
- Ask questions as you read....What's happening in this picture?...How do you think this person feels...? Why...? How would you feel if...? These questions can help the child to develop critical thinking skills, essential in the development of problem solving skills.
- Give the child time to respond. If you get no response, answer the question in a matter-of-fact tone of voice.
- Encourage the child to anticipate the story line: "What do you think will happen next?"
- When reading to older preschoolers and kindergardners: point out words as you read and encourage the child to point out words, too.
- Ask questions to encourage children to remember and retell a story, to help them think critically and come up with new ideas, solutions, and to explore their feelings.
- Storytelling is another way to inspire an interest in books and encourage children to make up their own stories. Children will gain a greater understanding of the written and spoken word and have lots of fun, too!
