HAVING FUN WITH SCIENCE
Listed below are some neat science projects to do in your family child care home:
Making Frost
- You'll need a large coffee can and one or more trays of ice, 1/2 cup of salt.
- Fill can 3/4 full with ice cubes.
- Pour in salt and stir with a large wooden spoon.
- Moisture will collect and freeze on the outside of can.
- Once the side of can is frosty, children can melt their fingerprints into the side of the can or scrape designs into the frost.
Guessing Game
- Place ice block in a warm, sunny location.
- Ask children to guess how long it will take the block of ice to completely melt.
- Children will enjoy checking on the progress of the melting throughout the day.
Salt Melt
Sprinkle rock salt and food coloring onto the ice. As the salt burns holes into the ice, the food coloring will make beautiful designs.
Making Ice Blocks
- Fill a clean cardboard milk carton with water and put it in the freezer overnight.
- Tear carton from ice block and place in a metal cake pan.
Comparison Game
- Place one ice block in a sunny, outdoor location and place another in a shady, indoor location.
- Ask the children to guess which one will melt first.
- Make a graph of the children's guesses.
